Evan and I played tag on the rink at the Kananaskis Lodge. It’s become a tradition for us to head out there every family day weekend – this time, just for the afternoon, however.

I tried shooting through my antique Fritz Hauff 7×35 binoculars. Combined, it gives the iPhone almost the same reach as the 300mm lens does on my DSLR.

This is the net around our trampoline, covered with hoar frost, as seen from the back door. More white stuff than Cyprus Mountain…

more freezing fog. more hoar frost.

I’d read the book in November 2008, having received it as a gift – before hearing about the movie (I only heard about the movie from the back cover of the book itself).

I read the book while on a caribbean cruise. the juxtaposition of the postapocalyptic bleak desolation with tropical warmth was surreal, and intensified the feeling of the book.

Amazing book. As a father, it was one of the scariest things I’ve ever read. What would you do for your child?

2010/02/12: Continuing the Friday fun theme, make a photo that goes with the title of a book you’ve read. #ds89

corridor

the sidewalk along 37th street, approaching 32nd ave (the north edge of campus) is lined by big poplars, hedges, and poles. it’s been nicely plowed, making for an easy ride – I use the sidewalk for about a block so I can get to the pedestrian crossing more safely.

I’d slept in, and was late for work, but needed to pause for a minute to cool down before I got to campus – I’d been pushing it pretty hard on the ride to make up time. I failed. Anyway… while cooling down, I figured I might as well try a wide angle photo of the scene…

2010/02/11: We often get stuck in a rut of always zooming to the longest focal length. Break out today by making a wide-angle photo. #ds88

passing through the bowmont pathway area in silver springs, on the way to campus. one of my happy places.

beauty, eh?

2010 February 9

the moon hangs over the bow river valley, with sunrise reflected off the still-liquid portion of the river.

2010/02/09: Franz Kafka said “Anyone who keeps the ability to see beauty never grows old.” Make a photo of something beautiful today. #ds86

more fun than blackboard

The Blackboard discussion board system is really quite amazing, in that it couldn’t have been designed any worse. It is easily the most awkward, clumsy, and deliberately obtuse discussion board software I’ve ever used.

There aren’t many things in life that are more fun than using the Blackboard discussion board system. But if we find any, they’ll be dutifully documented here.

someone went for a chilly walk through the hoar frost along 12 Mile Coulee. was she looking for something? someone?

2010/02/07: Challenge: Practice storytelling today. Look for 3 images that tell a story, and make a set of photos that go together. #ds84
