I’m working on my third year in a photo-a-day photography project, and there are days when it’s pretty near impossible to think of something to shoot. On days like that, you need an assignment – someone to give you a topic or subject, and you go hunting for (or staging) a photo to meet the assignment.

So, I cobbled together a simple web page to randomly generate assignments.

assignmentr

If nothing else, it might spark some ideas for you to create your own assignments.

If you use the utility, I’d love to hear about it! If you post to Flickr, throw a tag of “assignmentr” on the photo.

LOL – Good idea – you may get some interesting suggestions.

I heard this guy (http://jeffharris.org/) on Q (http://tinyurl.com/8yso9a) yesterday AM. He has done it for 10 years. Unless you want to hear about Marlon Brando, skip along to about the 3/4 mark in the audio.

  2. If your ever completely unsure of what to take pictures of, feel free to help us out by taking pictures of words.

My 6th grade class is collecting pictures of words. They will then use those words to make slide shows of their stories.

I checked it out and my first photo assignment was “yellow interesting digestion”. I’m not sure if I’d be able to make a great photo out of that. ;)

  3. Photo a day sounds easy, but its not. Its easy to take a photo a day, but the hard part is to keep it interesting. 3 years! I take my hat off to you.

    D’arcy,
I found time to check out some of your pics on flickr.
I loved this one, ’streetlight sunset, stoney trail, west calgary’
Reminds me a lot of War of the Worlds. Well taken.

    Thanks, Allan.

btw, the DoFollow Search Engine was wrong – my blog is set to add rel=nofollow on links in comments. nice try, though.

I’m impressed with your response D’arcy, I’m not sure how you knew that was how I found your site, but thanks for the heads up.
I am still glad I found your site, and I really do like that photo. keep up the good work.

Just thought I’d let you know I’ll be using these to inspire the kids in my Photography course at Boy & Girls Club tomorrow night.

    - Peace

Awesome, Dave! My wife worked for the Boys and Girls Clubs for many years, at the Marlborough centre.

My assignment: “white astonishing meat”. Hmmm…. A few ideas spring to mind but… er… don’t think I could post them. Thanks for injecting a bit of humour into the realm of photography. Often it’s a bit too sober and could benefit from a loud hysterical howl now and again.
