iPhone in Canada?

I just conducted some exhaustive and scientific research, trying to gather more information about iPhone availability in Canada as the big US release date approaches.

OK. Some clarification. By “exhaustive” I mean “I did a lap around Market Mall and poked my head into the Rogers and Fido shops” and by “scientific” I mean “I asked them ’so… iPhone much?’”

Regardless… The typical response was something like “eye phone? no.” That is, when I got a response at all.

So, I’m assuming this means one of 3 things:

  1. no iPhone in Canada anytime soon
  2. iPhone in Canada is pending, under a veil of secrecy enforced by threat of bodily harm to family pets
  3. clerks in cellphone shops are utterly clueless.

Personally, my money is split evenly on 1 and 3. I’d love to be wrong. I’d love to get my grubby little mitts on one of those suckers ASAP to start playing with what could be done for teaching and learning with a fully functional portable and mobile computer…

Darcy – my plan is – worst case, I could get a Cingular one and walk up and down Dallas Road here in Victoria making calls off the US cell towers.

Hah! That’s a great plan! They could sell them on the BC Ferries, too :-) I think the roaming charges from Calgary would be killer, though…

Who cares about roaming calls, as long as the data plans work both sides of the border. Interestingly Rogers/Fido no longer honour their Canadian data plans in the US – I used my $50/mo unlimited data with fido on a lot of trips now your paying by the KB in the US.

Darcy – Fido won’t get the iPhone it doesn’t match the target demographic for Fido which is youth. It will be Rogers, I’d guess it won’t be till January before we see one “legally” in Canada.

It seems it would be definitely No.1 from your list. see endgadget’s reporting on this:

“No iPhone eh? Apple’s launch in Canada still on hold”

Or, if you reside in the GTA – head to the Apple store in Buffalo – find one of the unlocks for the iphone, and work it on Rogers. Just like at http://www.iphonecanada.net Users Forums
