It's interesting that you mention that as we've been looking at Learning Object Repositories ourselves. Guess we didn't dive down into CAREO but we did notice in our research that the URL for GEODE is re-directing to some squatter.

It does speak to the question of whether repositories as they existed are appropriate for today or the future. What would a modernized version look like?

Hmm....

I think a modernized version already exists. It's Flickr. del.ico.us. YouTube. Ourmedia.org. And about a billion other tools all merged together. Small pieces loosely joined, and all that. There is no One True Repository. That was the fallacy we were all chasing... Along with reusability, and interoperability. It's more important to just go ahead and contribute content in whatever way(s) you feel comfortable, and let the power of the Internet Cloud bring it together for you.

Hey D'Arcy, did you stick this one in there? (learning object - snort!)

I know what you're getting at with the small pieces bit, but I'm not sure I completely agree with you, though that may be because my unit it responsible for DSpace here... Maybe I'm part of the problem...

Hey! You found my first test "object"! I didn't take that photo. Hope I don't get sued, now that you've dug it up :-)

I wasn't trying to say that there isn't a place for an Institutional Repository, just that it didn't work out the way we were thinking 5 years ago. I do strongly believe that an institutional reliance on any one technology is counterproductive - that goes for LMS, CMS, computers, etc... as well. CAREO is (was?) just one small piece in a larger puzzle, where the pieces are able to build on each other. DSpace needs to do that to stay relevant (CAREO failed to do that, and dropped off the radar).

I agree with your perspective on institutional reliance - the "all your eggs in one basket" issue. The more we looked, the less it seemed as if there was a specific software solution that we could point to. Our focus became more one of findability, of facilitation the search and retrieval process to make the service valuable to our campus community.

We could provide a storage solution if it were required but it really was more a question of how our faculty could contribute (link) their works and how they could then search for and find an appropriate solution for their own needs.

The social tools that are out there are wonderfully powerful but almost too much so if that makes sense. There are so many choices and venues that it is almost overwhelming to those who are not comfortable in a digital environment.

Thanks for your insights D'Arcy!
