My Photo on a Magazine Cover

Last month, while on vacation at a lakeside cabin in BC, I received an email asking permission to use one of my photos on Flickr for a magazine cover. “uh, sure? it’s creative commons, so have at ‘er. Can I have a copy?”

I got my copy today. Is that ever cool. It’s for a petroleum industry magazine “The Negotiator” (sounds like a movie starring Clive Owen or the like), and lo and behold, right on the front cover, is my photograph:

It’s not the first time one of my photos has been used in something like that - I’ve got one in the GifTRAP game, and one in a book about colours and shapes, but it’s still pretty cool to see one of my photos on a magazine cover!

You should have gotten paid for that, son! PAID!

I agree with Sami, I would have asked for the coin… like really the oil companies can afford it. If you start getting more calls for your work you might want to rethink the CC thing.

    But congrats all the same.

The photos were deliberately licensed under a CC-Attribution license. I intentionally did not select the NonCommercial clause because I want people to use them however they need. If I’d have gone into this expecting to make cash, it would be different. But I decided to freely share, which means people can use my photos however they want to, without paying me. If I ever do a contract photo shoot, those photos will be released under a different license. In the meantime, I’m just having fun taking photos, so any use is just gravy. It’s not like it costs me anything to let people use them.

Ironically, they picked a photo I took using the old FujiFilm POS camera :-) The camera doesn’t make the photo, of course.

They did provide a clear “Cover photograph by D’Arcy Norman” inside the front cover, so the CC-Attribution license terms were met.

Hey, congrats! Hey, I have GifTrap - which photo is yours?

the one with the circus tent bigtop. It’s cropped, but you might recognize it. If you squint just right, you can read the attribution text on the side of the photo on the card.
