I can freehand drag any crop I want, but in this case, I need to exactly match 2 separate aspect ratios (and target dimensions). Hard to do by eyeballing it, but easy enough with a round trip through Photoshop.

The Quad should be able to run it fine. Sure, I've (only?) got 2GB of RAM, but it doesn't <em>seem</em> to be bogging down too badly on RAM spooling or image loading, but on actually displaying stuff. This is with a mixture of RAW and JPEG files, so varying amounts of work being demanded.

I used the export-to-burn-folder trick. It works, but seems so, well, inelegant :-)

But, yeah. It's definitely one of my favorite apps too.

Not to defend one of my favourite apps or anything... but when I'm cropping wide I just turn off the standard size checkbox, and it'll happily let me crop however I like. My web layouts all happen in a graphics app anyway.

I noticed a lot of your gripes on my PowerBook, which was totally unsupported (12", so only a GeForce Go 5200), and had nowhere near enough ram. It's way better on the MBP - it can still take a couple of seconds for the loupe to show (it's loading & parsing 6MB raw images for me after all, that's quite reasonable), but then I have no problems dragging around. It holds several in ram too (~6 it seems for me, then it drops the last one, so going over it would cause the delay again).

As to iPhoto - I stopped using it once I started with Aperture, but I can see how that might be handy.

Export to DVD sounds great. I can't see it as a built in feature right now, but if you had a blank DVD in, could you export to the burn folder perhaps? I'll give that a try tomorrow.

I thought Aprture 1.5 could reference an iPhoto library. What do you mean by live reference and what are the limitations?
Thanks.

It can import an iPhoto library, but any changes you make to the iPhoto library after the import to Aperture aren't reflected in Aperture - it's got a snapshot, not a live reference to the current iPhoto library. So they'd get out of sync pretty quicky, with no easy way to keep Aperture's snapshot of the iPhoto library up to date.

I've had issues with the Dvorak layout in Aperture too. I'm starting to keep track of apps with Dvorak issues on the following web page.

http://www.chimoosoft.com/dvorak.html

Let me know if there are others.

Thanks.
