Thanks to some great work by Christoph C. Cemper, there is now a module available to enable email notifications for comments by anonymous users (which, on my blog, is everyone but myself) on a Drupal blog. There should now be a “follow comments by email” checkbox underneath the comment submission form, which adds the much-missed feature.

It needs a (minor?) change to the stock comment.module, but Christoph provides a modified version of that. Hopefully the changes aren’t drastic enough to make upgrading Drupal less straightforward.

Thanks to Christoph for his quick work on this (he started on it last night, and has a usable module available before noon today!) I owe you a beer or two for this!

  1. Darcy,

thanks a lot for testing the module so far… more fixes will follow today

I suggest you also install the module comment_info from http://drupal.org/node/67414 (didn't make it to a project yet) which helps remembering the sign in data for users

[I hate retyping my stuff here again, even with browser completion :-) ]

    cheers - christoph

  2. Done. Thanks for the tip (and sorry for the extra typing).

  3. Oh - good to see it implemented already :-)

    cheers-c

  4. This is the module I have been following.
    How does it work?
I’m expecting an option in this form to follow the comments, but I don’t see one.
    Just noting my progress.
    hmmmm.

  5. Michael, I’ve had to (temporarily) disable it because it was sending comment notifications on spam comments as well, which got a bit annoying. Once that’s fixed, there will be fields for email address etc… when submitting a comment, much like the WordPress subscribe plugin does.
