Well, not really an update. More like a ping to keep this from dropping off my back burner.
I’m just a little frustrated that I haven’t had a chance to do anything more than just whiteboard. Actually, I feel like I’ve done SFA about this, which is just wrong because I think EduGlu (or an evolution of MyGlu, or of AggRSSive, or of Drupal, or something else) is probably one of the Most Important Things That Need To Be Done™. I’m going to try to put some more thought into this (at the bare minimum) and possibly prototype something (likely wishful thinking at the moment).
Has anyone else been able to do anything on this? Bueller? Bueller? Bueller?

Bill, that sounds great! I’d taken a look at that post when it was first published. Sounds like a sane way to approach it – using separate tools that are good at what they do, rather than looking for The One True Tool.
Hello, D’Arcy,
A while back, I sketched this out. Since then, we’ve been working with Dave Tosh and Ben Werdmuller at Elgg to flesh this out.
As a piece of this, we’ve been working with JanRain on Single Sign On and distributed ID.
When the dust settles, this could all look a lot like EduGlu. Informal and formal learning environments coexisting, and all accessible with one login, with content flowing seamlessly between these sites.
And, it’s all built with freely available Open Source software.
I’m working on a post that contains some more details, but this work is moving along nicely — definitely Not Done Yet, but the road ahead seems pretty clear.
