iPodLinux + TuneTalk

Filed under: Uncategorized. Tags: , ,

I just dropped the latest version of iPodLinux on my iPod to test out recording at higher sample rates. I cranked it up to 44.1KHz, and the recording from the TuneTalk microphone sounded freaking amazing! I’ll have to do some more playing/testing to see how it works for longer recordings (how fast does it suck down the battery? does it still have the high-pitched whine in the background?)

But, while I had linux running on the iPod, I poked around at what else is offered. It’s got some new games, including a non-playable demo of TEMPEST! That is so cool! Apple, please include Tempest as a default game! That is SO perfect for the iPod controller… Oh, and it’s got a version of an Etch-A-Sketch program that is pretty cool. Yay, linux!

Yeah. I have a lava lamp that I’m pretty sure is running some form of embedded linux…

Man, Tempest is the sweetest game ever. I can’t even imagine how bad my thumb would hurt if Apple released that!

I have installed iPod Linux for the same reason - to record at a higher bit rate but no matter what I can’t seem to get it to record. I’m using a Belkin mic that works fine when booted with the standard iPod OS. 3G 15GB iPod. Oh well, maybe it’s the mic I’m using..

James: The Belkin Mic is not supported (yet). I’ve read somewhere that the iPodLinux folks are working on that. Or at least the Mic adapter Belkin is selling. I’d personally like to see that, too, it would make the iPod a perfect bootlegging machine :)

Doom2? Half-life? hexen? Duke Nukem3D? I didn’t know those games had been ported to iPod linux!!! Cool! I’ll definitely be checking them out.

Now, if only Marathon would get some iPod Linux loving… ;-)

Hm. No mention of Hexen, Doom2, Half-life, DN3D, but the official Games page on the iPod linux wiki mentions some cool games that are currently working, Lemmings is being ported, a Pool game, and TEMPEST is under development (although idle at the moment).

It’d be really cool if Apple included ports of some of these games, or opened the API to let people run them on Official iPod Software - not many non-geeks will install Linux on their iPods.

please excuse the neophyte question - can i record on my new ipod video using a simple microphone or do i need a belkin microphone adapter and do you know if it works on a video yet (doesn’t seem to line up with the video earphone jack)

    thanks

Mike - the new iPods with video have a different accessory jack - so the microphones out now won’t work with it. I imagine the iPod toy companies will come out with new versions that use the dock adaptor, but they haven’t been released yet.

If recording is really important to you, I can offer you a trade on my 3G iPod, which records really nicely… ;-)
