Sonnet iPod Battery

I was just about to finalize the purchase of a shiny new battery for my 3G iPod, when I noticed the shipping charges listed on the Sonnet online store.

Sonnet iPod Battery Costs

I’ll gladly pay for the battery, but paying $40 US ($10 US more than the cost of the battery in the first place) to have the thing mailed to me is a bit extreme. I’m going to hold off for now, to see if any Canadian stores or companies will be distributing the battery.

Yeah – it says “you may also be responsible for any duty/customs fees” – so brokerage isn’t included. Incredible rip-off for shipping…

The hell? If that includes brokerage it’s not too bad… probably doesn’t though… why on earth is 3 day shipping their only international option?

I ran into the same thing when I bought a “skin” for my iPod mini a long time ago. The product costed about $20, but the only shipping option to Canada was UPS Worldwide Express at about $40. Having to pay brokerage fees and taxes is bad enough, but the limited shipping options that some of these online stores provide are ludicrous.

Maybe we should open an iPod accessories store. There’s GOT to be a market for it, and it doesn’t appear as though the local shops are filling the void. CompuSmart carries a VERY limited selection (if anything’s in stock), and nobody has even heard that iPod batteries are user-upgradable…

Had the same,
I have filled the checkout at Sonnet shop and as I saw the $9+ shipping I stopped. Shipping is not that expensive in the US, I use Fedex and UPS all the time.

I have a better offer to Sonnet guys,

Sell the battery for $9.99 and charge $29.99 for the shipping. It is what you do anyway so get more out of it.

You can find them in Canada. Frontier PC (frontierPC.com) located in Vancouver resell them for $32 CAD. Shipping is about 15$.

Much much cheaper…

Great! Thanks, Simon. I’ll check a local reseller, too. MemoryExpress doesn’t seem to carry any iPod batteries…

10 FastMac ships to Canada, eh? at D’Arcy Norman Dot Net November 16, 2005 at 2:18 pm

[...] I was just chatting with Mike, from FastMac, about that iPod battery failure post I wrote up a while back, and the follow-up attempt to buy a new battery. Apparently, FastMac can ship to Canada for something like $10, express! Other guys charge more than the cost of the battery to ship it up here, but FastMac has a network of Canadian resellers or something, so it’s much cheaper. They haven’t updated the website with this info yet, so check back with them later to see what the official story is for shipping to Canada. [...]
