A little labor intensive but effective. I still prefer the way LaunchBar and Quicksilver operate for launching. Combined with Spotlight I rarely use the Finder. I guess it makes sense to "teach" spotlight about the preferred acronyms... This way, I could tie "email" to "Mail.app" - something that wouldn't happen "naturally".
