Windows Sucks Much Ass

Grrr.

I’ve been installing WinXP Pro for most of the day now. After switching back to the “classic” UI so my retinas stopped bleeding, I’ve been working through installing firewall, virus protection, SQL Server, IIS, etc…

Holy crap.

They must lock their engineers into a room and tell them to figure out the most annoying, non-intuitive ways of doing things (and presenting info to the user).

This started as a rant on our Mantis bugtracker, but it’s just gotten worse since I wrote this:

Still installing and updating WinXP. Holy crap that’s one bad OS. Ugleeeee. Designed by folks that should be kept in a server room somewhere…

What do I care that an update download is for KB826939, or that it is 5.300000000001 MB? How do they measure the .000000000001MB? Why on earth wouldn’t you just round that off? At a glance, it doesn’t even look like a meaningful number. I thought it was a serial number or something silly like that, but looking closer, it’s just providing waaaaay too much insignificant detail. Good freaking lord, they’re a bunch of rabid morons.

Little things, like, say, turning on the web server. I had to poke around for settings, run a network config wizard, and Add Software (which has been running for over an HOUR now – I could have compiled Apache FROM SOURCE in that time!). I’m guessing it’s going to take some mojo to actually get IIS running, after it’s been installed.

On MacOSX, it’s a quick trip to the System Preferences application, click a checkbox, and IT’S DONE. Web server enabled, with public directories for each user, and a big honkin’ Documents directory for the whole server (with CGI-EXECUTABLES and everything).

Wow. No wonder there is such a market for Windows IT folks. Someone could make a career out of installing Windows.

It takes me less than an hour to install MacOSX from scratch. With all services I need enabled and running. Securely.

UPDATE: It’s been “configuring components” for the last half hour. Getting a little nervous that installing a simple web server needs this much configuring. What exactly is getting installed, anyway? It’s just supposed to be a service that spits out text and/or binary files over HTTP on request. yeesh.

Windows is the greatest software ever!!!!! How? Without Windows I would never have learned about linux. No PEICE OF JUNK OS will never suck as bad as that. Look into your windows file, and you will see loads of advertisments, spyware is the terms you guys are most familiar with. Some dumb aol, a ad that tells you to buy microsoft products when you get hacked ect… ect… About 1.5 gigs is just advertisement. Heck my friend got a total hack, I mean complete system, and how does windows help? BY TRYING TO MAKE HIM BUY WINDOWS ANTI-SPYWARE complete BULL. No one is gonna pay $40 buck for software which is not going to help. I mean this is a trigger function. Windows has a program that says when you get hacked, show ad. WOW the user friendly os. User friendly my a**. We fixed it using a destructive reboot THAT WAS ONLY PROVIDED BY GATEWAY, decent company build your own, or I reccomend them. Oh yeah that stuff in your WINDOWS files, it’s undeletable, I mean WINDOWS WILL NOT LET YOU. I don’t want some AOL in my computer. Completely undeleteable, I mean add and remove still leaves it in the system files. There is a cure however, BUILD A FRIGGEN VIRUS THAT WILL DELETE IT FOR YOU. My computer does not have msn, yet I cannot DELETE MSN GAMING ZONE. Well Windows is ALSO DUMBING DOWN THE WORLD. The most amount of hackers, arguably, come from Germany. What makes Germany important, IT IS THE HOME OF COUNTLESS LINUX USERS. See, with windows most people do not understand how a computer works? HEll, in friggen America i’m the only kustom komputer builder in my schoool, 3,000 people and more. These people are becoming ignorant of computers because of WINDOWS. Instead of making a website by learning html, the STUPID IDIOTS USE MY SPACE. A windows type decision. SERIOUSLY, if windows was not the best solution for gaming I WOULD CHUG EVERY GOD DAMN WINDOWS COMPUTER THAT I OWN INTO A FIRE. Still not convinced? well look at it this way. -As computers advanced they become faster. WHY THE HELL IS WINDOWS SLOWING DOWN AS COMPUTERS GET FASTER. WHAT BULL. ALL YOU WINDOWS LOVERS DO NOT HAVE A REASON FOR THAT DO YOU. WELL IT LOOKS NICER AND CLEANER YOU MIGHT SAY? WELL EVEN IF YOU TURN IT INTO WINDOWS CLASSIC MODE IT’S STILL THE SAME FRIGGEN TRASH.

It is pretty obvious that Windows sucks, but if you have doubts to my above arguments then let me say that if you claim that windows xp has more features you NEED TO DIE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Linux is 100% kustomizable my friends. Every little thing in every little program, other than the windows one or liscened ones. is kustomizable. If you do not like the warning message, change it. Hate the start up screen change it. FOR PEOPLE WHO LIKE TO KUSTOMIZE THINGS TO THEIR PREFERENCES, WHY DO YOU GUYS SETTLE FOR WHAT WINDOWS THINKS AS STANDERDS. Yes, WINDOWS is compatible with all your software and hardware, but* to cure this just boycott windows vista. THis way some one, like Mandrake or sUsE can come out with a worth wild OS. Go ahead waste your money and come up with non-solid information about why windows is good. MOST PEOPLE IN THE WORLD THINK AN ALTERNATIVE TO WINDOWS IS CRAZY, like the Earth being freakin round. I, Toberoo, will be the Christopher Columbus with anyone else by trying to get Linux widespread. A computer is able to run 24/7 for 6 years with no errors, try it on windows, I dare you. For those that are still not convinced, I don’t have time, i’m trying to hack direct x into Mandrake. for those that sail my ship for the truth and a better future, start by googling open office and downloading it, alternate to word, and boycott windows. Peace out home P.s. sorry it’s so long

                       sincerely Toberoo the giant Rodent

So I just did a quick search for “Why does windows suck ass” and found this blog.. Why? because I was waiting for my friggin Outlook and IE to open.. I use Firefox of course because IE sucks ass… but that’s another blog all together.

I agree Windows sucks ass. I wish I were a MAC person.. maybe I’ll switch.. I know that windows systems have been created for Linux that emulate much of what we see in Win XX; only thing is, all of my software that’s been paid for is for a windows sytem… hmm, I guess it’s just a matter of time and learning how to use all of the free software that comes with Linux.

So MAC OSX looks promising… I mean as the ultimate Web server.. Unix based, fast and steady.. IIS still doesn’t hold a candle to Apache..

    so there’s my 3.5 cents

I actually find it funny how windows slows to a crawl after a few years on a computer. And this one (XP) was a P4 1.8 with 1 GB of RAM and a ATi Radeon 9550 that had never been connected to the internet, and the user never installed any "Trial" crap off CD's that came in the mail or whatever. He only installed Office and a few games. And it was running slower than my Celeron 266 (WHICH HAS NO L2 CACHE!!!). Geez. I mean, my uncle had a Mac IIci (25 MHz) until a few months ago, and before he got a new one it was still running as fast as it was when he bought it… 15 years ago… (btw it started in 15 seconds flat. no joke).

Another thing that really makes me laugh is that low-end OEM computers (i.e. Dell, Gateway, Compaq) always are advertised as being perfect for "Basic web surfing" and "Checking email". Nothing more seems possible with these machines. And these computers typically have 2.5 GHz processors. Look back 5 years, and there were 900 MHz Celeron computers that were described as being suited for the same thing. Checking email hasn't been more processor intensive over the last 10 years (I've checked email on a 386sx). So it's just the latest version of windows slowing it down.

I think Microsoft needs to wake up and realize many people don't upgrade their OS for "features" that eat your computer's speed for breakfast; instead a lot of us upgrade for program compatibility, driver support, and bug fixes. Seriously.

It's not about that… at all … they know … Microsoft knows …
    There are 2 classes here … 3 sorry …
    - youngsters
    - old school
    - we

    1. the first one's evolution still stands before counter strike and half life and * like that … games … you cannot ask for more from them
    2. the second .. well here in romania, when you're working 10-12 hours / day in order to be actually able to pay your fees and **** – you really do not care about a ***
    * game or **** like that
    3. we know the difference .. we know the quality … they know we know it … but we are to few comparing to the rest up there …

now i really believe they're betting on the first 2 classes… we're only 2% or less …. now tell me … why would they change the way things go up there …. when they still have 98% of the population who knows about computers – at list how to power them up …. why would they change the flow when they are goin on profit……

    :)
God help us … we the only one who can make the difference …
    Cheers!

Also found this post by searching “windows update sucks ass” – at least my soul calms a bit after 3 days of massive frustration caused by useless mocking on that piece of non-working, system-freezing shit. (With absolutely NO malware found, and correct system maintenance through the years. Not using IE, and in general: understanding and using things on a good power-user level (at least I thougt so…))

My brother already uses Linux, and I think, this is the time to give it a try.

What I’m ultimately fed up with is with this crap, you can never be sure about what once you fix, remains that way.

(Only problem is I need some winsuxx based apps for my work (quite massive ones, like CAD), and I even can’t run them on a networkless machine, or partition, because the workflow involves massive googling/part-downloading all the time.)

    My Story of Windows

I got my very first computer for christmas. It wasn’t supposed to do much other than web browsing and school work. That machine allowed me to learn about computers and how they work: what RAM is, the hard drive works, what the motherboard and processor are for, etc.

Anyway, I used the best free anti-virus I could find (or my family could find) and had a backup scanning program on call incase something went wrong. My computer ended up being rather slow. I figured out that the hard drive (80GB/60 after xp install) thought it only had about 5 gigabytes left. So I did a little spring cleaning. I removed many huge programs, and all the bloatware that came on it. I deleted multi gigabyte files, and even wiped out my pictures, since I had nothing worth while. For some reason, I still only had 5 gigabytes left of space. WHAT THE FUCK!?! On the Macintosh my family uses, when you empty the trash, you see a stinking rise in your free space instead of getting this crap.

So I restored the computer back to its original state. It didn’t take long to catch a virus while I was on my way to retrieve my antivirus back. So I restored it again. Now, when I first started with 55 or 60 gigabytes, whey am I now starting with 50 to 55 gigabytes? More bull crap from Microscam. I reformatted the damn thing after that. After restoring it, and running the disk repair, nothing happened. I’m still left with less room. Oh, and my computer is slower than it was before I restored. Now, when I restore it, wouldn’t you expect it to go faster? It got slower on me. I wanted to sell it online for 10 dollars just so I can get rid of it.

The final straw: My wireless card could not hold a connection for more than one second. It would connect, and disconnect. When I first got it and installed it, it held signals of 80-90% sharing with an Mac Airport. It went down to average 20%. Then it just wouldn’t hold.

So I heard about Ubuntu. To make a long story a little less long, I love Ubuntu. Firefox works better, OpenOffice works better, PiTiVi and Movie Player work great, It works with my AIM account natively, and I can install skype, and it has lots of great games I can play, it FINALLY boots up under a minute, my wireless card was revived! Even though, where it is, it only holds a 20% connection (router is ill placed) it runs like a 70 to 80% connection.

The best part about Ubuntu is: It’s free.
