NetNewsWire Pro (almost) supports Blosxom!
Filed under: Uncategorized. Tags: entry. | Leave a Comment
Just grabbed the latest beta of NNWP (beta 12), and it has better support for my Blosxom blog. It looks like it’s still a little incomplete – only sees one level of the folder hierarchy – but that’s definitely a step forward, since it didn’t see any folders before…

Tabs in Safari – Possible Implementation
Filed under: Uncategorized. Tags: entry. | Leave a Comment
I’ve been thinking about the whole “I need tabs in Safari” issue, and have come to realize that no, in fact, I don’t need tabs in Safari.
What I need is a way to manage multiple open web pages in a single window. Tabs are only one implementation of this. And they tend not to scale well (open 15 pages as tabs in Chimera to see what I mean).
What would work is some way to list any number of pages associated with a single window. Something like the Bookmarks mode in Safari is a good start. It makes it easy to list pages, but it’s modal.
How about a hybrid approach, one that uses the bookmarks interface from the Bookmarks mode, in combination with the Browse mode?
I’ve done a quick and dirty mockup of something that approaches what I’m thinking about. Take a look at this, and let me know what you think.

Hidden Safari Trick
Filed under: Uncategorized. Tags: entry. | Leave a Comment
I just stumbled across this little gem…
If you have pages in your bookmarks bar in Safari, hit Command+1 to open the first one, Command+2 to open the second, etc…
My bookmarks bar is mostly full of folders, but there are a couple of pages, and the Command+# maps to their non-folder order from the left side
Quite cool. Wonder what other goodness is hiding in there… Already have mouse gesturing thanks to Cocoa Gestures. Slick.

Resources for getting into MacOSX
Filed under: Uncategorized. Tags: entry. | Leave a Comment
I was just asked for some online resources for a Windows admin getting into MacOSX. Here’s what I came up with:
On a MacOSX Box:
just hit Command+? (or go to the help menu)
On the web:
- Apple’s MacOSX Site
- Apple’s Switch Site
- Dive Into OSX
- Apple’s UNIX-based Apple seminar
- Orielly’s MacDevCenter MacForUNIX Page
- Apple’s Intro to Security on MacOSX
- MacOSXLabs: Deploying MacOSX in a Higher Ed Setting
- Ars Technica’s Review of MacOSX
- MacOSXHints: Good tips for the MacOSX User/Admin/Developer
- Stepwise: Mostly for the developer, but good links for users.
- MacOSXHints: Good tips for the MacOSX User/Admin/Developer
- Ken Bereskin’s Weblog (Ken is Apple’s Product Manager for MacOSX)
I’ll add any others that I come across.

New entry in the Battle of the Ancient Games
Filed under: Uncategorized. Tags: entry. | Leave a Comment
Just came across Strike Force, linked from MacUpdate.com.
Holy crap. That’s one complete mod for Unreal Tournament. I’ve tried it for a couple of minutes, and it looks even better than UT:Infiltration (which is a pain in the #SS to get running on OSX, but Strike Force just plain worked).

iLife, with new iApps, new TiBooks, new Airport. Woohoo.
I REALLY have to replace this TiBook400… A 17 inch, gigahertz, 60-gig, GeForce4-sporting, superdrive-packing beast. wow. And only $5200 CDN.
iPhoto2 looks freaking amazing… Looking forward to trying out the one-click image enhancement (although PixelNhance is a nice app, too).
I don’t do enough presentations to really dig Keynote, but it would be nice to ditch more MS stuff if I ever need to do some presentations…
Personally don’t care too much about iDVD or iMovie – I don’t have a digital video camera, or convenient access to a DVD burner (although THAT might change with a SuperTiBook…)
I was afraid that the garbage the rumour sites were spreading about commercialization of the iApps. They were suggesting that the iApps might not be available as free downloads, and would only be offered for a fee. Thankfully, that turned out to be a load of crap, since the only iApp that has a fee is the freakin’ HUGE iDVD. I think offering a physical bundle of iApps in the iLife box is an excellent idea. Not everyone has broadband, and having the apps on physical media is just plain handy. Ideally, they should pack a whole bunch of extra goodies onto the box (Safari, X11, Developer Tools, perhaps 3rd party samples – Omni apps, game demos, etc..).

Battle of the 3-year-old Games
Filed under: Uncategorized. Tags: entry. | Leave a Comment
I’ve been playing Quake3Arena for the past few months, and it runs pretty well on my creaky TiBook400. I’m pretty hooked on the Urban Terror mod, since it’s a wee bit (i.e., WAAAAY) more fun than plain vanilla Q3A.
I was planning on picking up Medal of Honor: Allied Assault over the Christmas break, but a couple of things held me back:
how well would it run on a TiBook400?
$75 CDN FOR A FREAKING GAME???!!!???
After that, I was thinking of picking up Ghost Recon, which does run quite well on the TiBook, but there’s still the cost. I just can’t justify $75 for a game, no matter how amazing it is.
So, I’ve resigned myself to sticking with a game that I already own. That leaves Q3A, and Unreal Tournament, both of which I picked up a couple of years ago (and with ran fine on a G3/300 with a crappy video card). Q3A runs OK, but a bit pokey, on the TiBook. Well, then… Why not try out UT?
It takes a hell of a lot to install UT under MacOSX. Actually, it’s impossible without Classic. WTF? I go ahead and install it, and the patches to bring it up to the latest version, and fire it up. Wow. It runs pretty darned well. Frame rate MUCH higher than Q3A. Should be cool.
A couple of years ago, I played a LOT of UT, and the Infiltration mod specifically. Figured I’d try to install Infiltration and see how it works. Again, installation was a royal pain in the *ss, since it requires Classic, and messing with privs on a couple of directories. Oh, and there’s a missing file, so gametypes don’t show up. Doh.
Anyway, short story long, I finally got UT:Infiltration working, and DAMN, it’s pretty darned good. Nice gameplay, great graphics, and fast action. This might be an Urban Terror killer. Had to fiddle quite a bit to get sound and stuff working, but it’s working OK now… Cool.

The good old hockey game

Saw the Flames vs Wild game last night, in great seats. Wow. That was just plain fun.
Fast game, good play on both sides, and we won. Undefeated with the new coach. Woohoo… Took some pics (might upload them somewhere…)
